  • "This is a superb property and certainly worth the money."

We had a family of ten staying for a week in February. Such a big house could be cold but the central heating was more than adequate (the kitchen Aga was always warm) and the three wood burners and an endless supply of logs kept us cosy. We usually ate in the kitchen but had a lovely formal meal in the dining room prepared by a local chef. All the facilities were well-used including the tennis court, the hot tub, the sauna and the games room (with quality games). The house has been very well modernised to preserve the original character downstairs together with the stairs and landings - all with old wooden floors. The bedrooms were enormous, carpeted and with a range of bed options which meant that all the families were happy. Each room had an excellent ensuite with unlimited hot water. Having two lounges meant that the children could colonise one and spread their games over the floor without annoying the adults. The grounds are extensive but in winter wellingtons are essential. Also, at this time of year a number of local attractions were closed (Chirk Castle, the local dairy and the Pontcysyillte Aqueduct) and remember that the house is in a rural setting - the surrounding roads were awash with mud (small roads and big tractors moving between fields). Highly recommended and must be a jewel in the summer.

The property

Ellesmere 4 miles.

Plas Yolyn is a luxurious stately home, steeped in history and situated 4 miles from Ellesmere in Shropshire.

Striking an imposing image as you first enter the impressive grounds, this Grade II* listed property dates back to the 17th century and has been variously connected to the Sheriff of Shropshire, Oliver Cromwell and Welsh royalty during its colourful existence.

Having been carefully renovated and restored in recent times, the original architecture and decorative features of this magnificent property have been retained to provide an impressive holiday home with more than a touch of class and luxury, including a bubbling hot tub and a two person sauna.

The gravel drive sweeps round to the house with its impressive facade and the heavy wooden door leads into a grand entrance hall, furnished with a baby grand piano and leather conversation sofas placed in front of a large woodburner.

To the left is an impressive banqueting hall with wood-panelled walls, with room enough for the whole party to sit comfortably, whilst to the right there is a drawing room with garden doors onto the patio, not to mention gorgeous original sash windows and shutters, as well as a roaring open fire.

The country kitchen forms a central hub around the generous breakfast table and oak rocking chair, warmed by an original oil AGA and retaining a splendid red quarry tile floor and exposed oak beams, complemented by modern granite work tops.

There’s also a cosy snug just perfect for reading, again enjoying a warming woodburner and this room leads through to two stylish ground floor bedrooms, both with en-suite shower facilities.

The first floor is accessed from either the main staircase or the secret former servant’s staircase, both of which lead up to five well-proportioned and beautifully-presented bedrooms, all boasting en-suite shower facilities and garden views.

In addition, a spacious family bathroom offers a free standing bath, a walk-in shower and a two person sauna, whilst there are three further cloakrooms available on the ground floor.

Children and adults alike will enjoy the well-equipped games room with full-size table tennis, Smart TV and many games and toys, ideal for a rainy day's entertainment.

Outside the grounds are equally impressive, covering 10 acres of countryside, with a formal garden to the side of the property, where you will find the hot tub and patio area surrounded by established borders, whilst to the front of the house there’s a croquet lawn, leading to a dried-up leat with lawns stretching beyond.

To the rear of the cottage you will find a hard-standing tennis court and practice wall and an orchard, as well as woodland walks and a pretty lake.

For the more adventurous, perhaps try tackling a section of the nearby Wats Dyke Way, or the Offa's Dyke trail which can be found in Chirk, just five miles away.

This recent winner of a 'Sykes GEM Gold award' is a truly special property in a fantastic location, sure to leave you with superb memories of a luxurious break away.

Note: This property has a refundable Good Housekeeping bond of £250.
