The thunderstorms hit just after I took these so I didn’t get a chance to take the ones with me wearing it yet!
I already knew that I would love working with the velvet, because I’ve used the green of it before (although I was concerned that “Ginger” would be too bright) but I wasn’t prepared for the absolutely lovely quality of this twill!
I was looking to make this coat fairly light weight because I wanted it to really swirl out on the skirt and because I sometimes feel a bit claustrophobic in heavy, fitted coats. This fairly lightweight twill is exactly what I was looking for. It is really stable and lively to work with. It frays a little (not to the level of some fabrics I’ve worked with lately) but I used pinking shears to finish the seams and added a strip of black bias tape to finish the front facing to avoid the fraying becoming an issue.
I have added the optional shoulder pads, covering them with a scrap of velvet to make the inside neat.
The buttons were from elsewhere but the elastic cord for the button loops and the trim are also tagged below.
I took the trim a bit further to the inside at waist level then I think the pattern meant but I wanted to make sure I didn’t end up with a dodgy end on the braided trim as I’m not confident I quite attached it as thoroughly as I could have.
I’m really looking forward to wearing this out! I’m sure I’ll feel over dressed to start with but will enjoy the swish.
