From the deep dark depths of the oceans comes the lovable and sometimes hugs a little too tight, Octavius and Stubby the African Flower Octopuses.

This pattern for my African Flower Octopus is my fourth pattern. I have tried really hard to make it visually easy to follow, as well as written instructions. (Although I am a big visual fan, so my photos may say more.)

This pattern includes both versions for the tentacles... 16 legs for the price of 8! So you can make either one!

I would greatly appreciate it if you respected my pattern(s). It’s insane how much time, effort and hair pulling goes into each new creation and pattern.
I have tried really hard to correct all the error (grammar and instructional) as possible.

Some important things to know when making your octopus…

1.First read the whole pattern through and have a good understanding of how your octopus is assembled.
2.It’s best if you know how to make the African flower motifs. I have tried really hard to describe the process in making them… but I am new to designing patterns, so I’m sure I missed something… hopefully I didn’t.
3.I use the “join as you go” method as described in Heidi Bears Designs. If you don’t know it or are not comfortable with that method, then I suggest sewing it together.

Material needed:

The octopus that has been crocheted for this pattern was made using sock weight/DK. I cannot tell you the exact amount of yarn to use. It is a great way to use up all your leftover yarn. I prefer to use 2.5mm hook and fingering/sock/sport/sometimes DK weight yarn.
Using this sock/ dk weight yarn will give you an octopus approximately 37cm long, 21cm tall, 37cm wide.

Crochet Hook 2.5mm

I like my stitches TIGHT. So adjust your hook to the weight of your yarn and to your skill level.

Polyester toy stuffing

Scissors, blunt end Needle used for sewing in ends and sewing fins on

Eyes (16mm plastic safety eyes or wire-looped eye buttons are my preferred).

NOTE BUTTON OR EYES CAN BE A SAFETY HAZARD FOR SMALL CHILDREN! If this toy is for a child, perhaps crochet eyes and sew them on. Still create eye sockets before embroidering the eyes on…this adds character to your creation.

Basic Crocheting Skills: Chain stitch (ch) , Single Crochet (sc), Double Crochet (dc), Slip Stitch (sl st), joining a chain to make a ring, joining in a new color yarn.
