I love sewing - joining together a few pieces of material and turning them into something great. But with the production of fabric for the fashion industry causing a huge problem for our environment - from greenhouse gases to water and air pollution (not to mention the often poor working conditions in the making of fabrics and clothing at some stage along the way) - it can feel like all further increases on demand are just adding to the problem. This is when I started thinking about how many materials are thrown away just because they are currently in the shape of an item - out of style or damaged clothes, curtains, duvets, cushions, bags, blankets etc. which either make it to charity shops or head for landfill. We live in such a throw-away society and often forget that the items we no longer want for their purpose have materials which have more life to give. So I've started hunting for these materials to salvage them and turn them into gifts to be enjoyed and loved again.

I find materials I like which are good quality, wash them well to ensure everything is clean and as good as new, then get unpicking to take them apart. I aim to use as much fabric as possible from everything I salvage, also using any extras such as buttons or hooks when I can. I only buy and use new materials and notions which I can’t find second hand (such as ribbons or elastic). As my items are made from different materials depending on what I find, each is slightly unique.
