Summary

Book five of the Siege of Terra

After a series of victories, the Imperial forces are on the back foot once more. The power of Chaos is rising, the Traitors gain ground, and all hope seems lost. Can Terra endure?

Listen to it because: delve back into the biggest war in Imperial history, which is getting even bigger as Traitor Titans land and the influence of the warp grows, plaguing the defenders in all sorts of vile ways.

The story: the victories of Saturnine and the sacrifices of the Eternity Wall space port have faded into the hope of yesterday. Denied but not defeated, the Traitors intensify their assault on the Imperial Palace. With the principal space ports in Horus’ hands, the Warmaster now drains the heavens of his reserves.

As the pressure of the assault increases, the power of Chaos waxes. The waking lives of the defenders are filled with despair, while their dreams pull them in search of a false paradise. As the fabric of the defences fails and the will of those who stand on them cracks, Horus commands the Titans of the Legio Mortis to breach the walls. Against them stands the might of Mercury Wall and the strength of the Legio Ignatum. Ancient rivals, the god-engines of both Legions meet in battle, while within the walls a few desperate individuals seek a way to turn back the tide of the warp’s malign influence. Across Terra, lost warriors and travellers make their way through wastelands and gardens of horror, towards home and an unknown future.

Written by John French. Narrated by Jonathan Keeble. Running time 16 hours 26 mins.

It has god engines!

Overall, a bit all over the place.
Too many plot lines and felt disjointed.

The individual parts were well written and enjoyable. If it had follwed two or three of the plotlines it would have been better, in my opinion.
Jonathan Keeble is as outstanding as ever as a narrator.

One of French’s weaker ones

Not the best work from John French. The Ol story arc is confusing at best. Same for the Keeler & Cinderman Arc. Titan ware fare is hard to find a unique angle on and he hasn’t found it. Other aspects felt like filler.
There are some good moments, but it’s a challenge to get through. The performance from Jonathan Keelble enables you to though.

Not as good as saturnine but still great

Another book down in the series and it’s well worth a listen. I’ve never really been a fan of titans and knights but this story helps to bring that side of the lore to life and does it well, the only downside is there are only so many adjectives available to describe really big and powerful and there were a few times in the story where the same metaphors or turns of phrase were repeated which suggests it could have done with a little more time in the edit.

Also, there’s quite a lot of Jon Grammaticus which may not be to everyone’s taste, but unlike some of the others where he’s just a traveller, in this one he actually does things - which is nice.

The humanity amongst the inhumane

From the beginning of my journey into the Grim Darl, back in the 90’s, the 1st Legion were my favourites so I loved Corswain making his appearance in this book but above all I found myself really enjoying the tale of Shiban Kahn - his heroic determination and pure humanity had me enthralled and has lead the White Scars to be my second favourite legion. Never let it be said that the White Scars are brutes, there is poetry in the noble ways.
