Why is shipping so expensive?

Customers often ask why shipping is so expensive for some of my items. Shipping costs are based on the weight of the product and are calculated by the USPS. I do NOT add handling charges or add on a charge for my shipping supplies. In order to keep costs as low as possible for my customers, I recycle all boxes and shipping supplies (using newspaper, shredded paper, recycled bubble wrap, etc).
