*RICE IS MICROWAVEABLE—it provides a therapeutic weight and moist heat that promotes healing and relaxation. Microwave for 1–3 minutes, testing at 30 second intervals; do not overheat.

**DO NOT MICROWAVE GLASS BEADS—it would be like microwaving an empty glass cup. If you want to use glass beads to capture a heated effect, put the removable insert on a clean baking sheet in a warm oven (below 275°F) or clean crockpot for 10–20 minutes.

Some people fill an Empty inner bag with glass beads or poly-pellets to double the typical weight the critter can hold. The inner bag's strong velcro seal makes it re-sealable and re-fillable.

Critters are available in various sizes/dimensions to accommodate different weights:

-- SM = 2 lbs rice / 3–4 lbs with glass beads (Little size for little people)

-- MED/REG/LG = 3–4 lbs rice / 5–8 lbs with glass beads (Standard size for most people)

-- XL = 5–6 lbs rice / 9–10 lbs. with glass beads (Extra big & heavy!)

The weight & scent can be slightly adjusted by choosing EMPTY or Rice w/Velcro insert from drop-down menu. (Sewn shut inserts don't allow adjustments—recommended if giving to a young child so the filler doesn't accidentally get spilled by curious little hands)

Because glass beads are more dense than rice, it doubles the typical weight of the critter. DO NOT MICROWAVE GLASS BEADS; heat in a warm oven or crock pot instead

The cover may be taken off and machine washed cold, gentle cycle. To keep the critter looking like new, wash and dry it separately, using a delicate mesh laundry bag. No fabric softener.

FOR YETI, SASQUATCH, MONSTERS and LLAMA: Luxe llama fur can be finicky in the
laundry so air drying is recommended (either hang dry or blow dry) to keep the llama fur looking and feeling soft and fluffy.

FOR SWIRL FABRIC: Use only COLD water and no-heat settings for drying. (The minky fabric will lose its embossed "swirl" design on a heat setting.)

All other critters can withstand machine washing and drying at cool (low) temperatures.
No dryer sheet.

Never iron minky fabric.

The micro glass beads are not sharp…they are incredibly smooth teeny tiny round beads that gently move around like soft sand. They are often used in weighted blankets and reborn dolls because of their silky smooth heft. They are more dense than rice, and so I include them as an option because a lot of people want their critter as heavy as possible.

I do not recommend microwaving glass beads (it would be like microwaving an empty glass cup). If you want to use glass beads to capture a heated effect, put the removable insert on a cookie sheet in a warm oven (below 275°F) or clean crock pot for 10–20 minutes.

A glass filled insert heated in my Breville oven at 270°F for 20 minutes heated up to 145°F. An hour later the temperature had dropped to 105°F.

A rice filled insert heated in my microwave on High for 3 minutes (shaking the contents every 1 minute interval) heated up to 140°F. After one hour, it dropped in temperature to 110°F.

Conclusion, they both heat up well and retain their heat well. And because they are usually inserted back into the critter (the critter cover acts as an insulator), they actually stay warmer much longer.

So both of them work great! It's just a matter of what type of heat you like (dry or moist) and what weight you like. :)

Yes, and No.

If you choose an "Empty, you fill" removable insert from the drop-down menu and fill it yourself, you could potentially fill it with more weight, but please be aware that it will become more stiff the more you fill it.

If you choose to have the removable insert pre-filled with rice or glass beads, I will fill it to the optimum weight shown in the listing/drop-down menu so that it is pliable, conforms to the body, and provides a nice heft.

Several years ago I lived in a dingy apartment that had no functioning bathtub, and after almost a year I'd saved enough up for a 2-night solo stay in a king suite with a jacuzzi tub. Of course I knew I was excited to finally soak in the bath, and I had the large tub filling within 10 minutes of checking into my room. But after so long without this luxury at all, to slip into a bubble bath that reached up to my chest without even leaning back... Man. As the warmth seeped into my bones, I was absolutely unprepared for the tears that came pouring down my face out of sheer relief, joy, and comfort. Lying on my couch with my new critter on my chest for the first time did not evoke the same feeling, but it was damn close.
