The Clara Dress is an Intermediate level sewing pattern. It is for a garment that sized and proportioned to modern, plus-size, un-corseted bodies; however, if you wish to make the dress for historical costuming (i.e., worn with a corset) it is very easy to adjust to accommodate that goal by changing to the appropriately-sized waistband. The same pattern pieces can be used to create a knit dress inspired by vintage 1970's fashion.
View A is a full-length Romantic Era dress. View B is a calf-length vintage 1970's inspired knit dress. Both dresses are sized for modern waistlines. The pattern has been created with plus size bodies prioritized during the design process, and has sought to solve the fitting concerns that are often ignored in "standard size" patterns. As always, this pattern is a starting point and not guaranteed to fit perfectly; a mock-up is an essential part of the process of creating a successful new garment.
The model wearing the white dress in the pictures is wearing the pattern size 18 with a pattern size 14 waistband, fit over a Victorian corset; she wears a "street size" 14. She is also wearing the blue and orange knit dress, made in a pattern size 16 and worn without shapewear. The model wearing the purple floral dress is wearing the pattern size 26 with the waistband at a pattern size 22, fit over a Victorian corset; she wears a "street size" 20. That model is also shown wearing the pink knit dress made with pattern size 26 and worn without shapewear.
The pattern is available in A0 format to print on a plotter or at a copy shop at 36" (92 cm) wide, or in A4 format to print out at home.
