Summary

The second novel in the new, gripping supernatural thriller series from international best-selling author Jodi Taylor.

From the frying pan into the fire....

Betrayed, terrified and alone, Elizabeth Cage has fled her home. With no plan and no friends, she arrives at the picturesque village of Greyston and finds herself involved in an ages-old ceremony that will end in death.

And that might be the least of her problems - the Sorensen Institute would very much like to know her whereabouts. And Michael Jones is still out there, somewhere, she hopes. No matter how far and how fast she can run, trouble will always find Elizabeth Cage.

Continuity error

I'm sad that i won't get to listen to the second book in this series. The first book "White Slience" read by Kate Scarfe was an intriguing story and well read. The second book might well be as good but its being read by a new narrator (Julie Teal) who approaches the character completely differently which ruins the story completely. Its not to say Julie narrates poorly, she actually performs it well. Its just that we've already committed to how the character was narrated in the first book.

Hopefully in the future this error may be corrected.

Odd Choice of Narrator

The book is absolutely brilliant, as I have come to expect from Jodi Taylor, but the main character, Elizabeth Cage, is a young woman (as she describes herself at one point in the book, and as I know from reading White Silence) so I found it odd that the narrator is, and sounds like, a woman in her 50’s. Julie Teal is an excellent narrator, I just found her a strange choice for this book.

Hyacinth Bucket

Bad in so many different ways. The new narrator adds further confusion to how old the dowdy Mrs Cage is supposed to be but my guess is about 60, with a desire to seem younger.
She’s still residing in a weird world where you have a Colonel living next door, a ‘booze cruise’ is unfamiliar modern lingo and dressing down means wearing a pussy cat bow and tan tights. It seems to be an unintentional pastiche.
More irritating though is the incessant repetition of phrases which a good editor should’ve dealt with.
The ideas are there but the storytelling is very amateur. Too much dwelling on attractive hanging baskets and how big and strong the menfolk are, and too little coherent plot.
Not as dark as the first book (unfortunately) and more concerned with telling us how special Mrs Cage is rather than demonstrating it.
I think this story says a lot more about the author and how she sees herself than was intended.

disappointing - wrong narrator

Loved the first book but this one the narrator was totally wrong, she just did not capture the essence of Elizabeth Cage at all. Kate Scarfe (narrated the first book) was much better and such a shame she did not carry on this book. Although Julie Teal is not too bad she is just the wrong voice for her and did not do justice to any of the other characters sadly.

The story itself was pretty poor, the character ibis and his sward was just not in keeping with the premise of the fist book , although the first book had moments of evil and monsters but middle earth swards etc just did not fit, poor direction.

Was really looking forward to this but sadly just lost interest and was an effort finishing it which is very rare for me, especially as I gave her first book 5 stars.

If you liked the fist book, leave it there, series is now done after this book for me, such a shame. Leave alone

Awful....nothing like the first book.

I loved White Silence, I thought it clever and intriguing, so much so that I immediately bought Dark Light, I couldn't wait to get in my car and meet up again with Cage and Jones....
It started quite well, but soon descended into a trite pseudo fairy story with trolls and sword welding hunters that were obviously poached directly from lord of the rings.
What happend???, Did Ms Taylor get bored and get someone less capable to write this book...
I shall be returning it for something more grown up.

Dark Light....so disappointed

The first book was brilliant.....this was boring and weird.
A troll under the bridge....what is this....a children’s story.
Wouldn’t bother !

Worth the wait

I do love the way that Jodi Taylor writes, I really enjoyed the first in this series and waited eagerly for this one. I was not disappointed, the characters I loved are still around and an additional one is added to the mix. Parts of this book are a bit over the top in weirdness, but all in all it was a riveting story and very nicely written and narrated.

Twists and Turns

Thoroughly enjoy Jodi Taylor's knack of extending suspense and leaving the reader wondering. However, very disappointed, even if part of the mind games, that the narrator made Cage sound like an aged aunt more at home in Borsetshire.

Inconsistencies in voice for Series (20-something character now sounds 80 in the second book)

I make a point of listening to the Jodi Taylor books on audible. I feel like something went wrong at audible when they chose Julie Teal for this book.

The first book clearly states that the main character is in her 20s - and the voice by Kate Scarfe ‘worked’ beautifully with the character.

Even if Ms Scarfe was unavailable, they should have chosen a similar ‘voice’ to give like to Jodi Taylor’s book.
Instead I kept picturing a ‘Judi Dench’ type of character when listening (not a clever young woman).

I hope Audible steps up to fix this error, especially if this is a continuing series.

A bit of a willy nilly plot

I wanted to enjoy this series, but it really feels like wasted potential for the protagonist, as she is an empath able to help restless spirits with her strong personality, but she seems to sit around until things happen to her. I also feel like plot events just happen and then snap back to the status quo. Escape a death cult? Straight back home without even trying to get justice for their victims. Then she's in a fantasy world with mythical creatures? I adore The Nothing Girl by the same author, so please don't take this as blind bashing.
