Invest In Our Planet

Every year the Earth Day Network creates a theme for Earth Day that is intended to bring communities together to accomplish a common goal. This year’s theme is Invest In Our Planet by building a profitable and equitable future and healthy cities, countries, and economies. How will you Invest In Our Planet this year for Earth Day?

Check out our 5 tips below to help you have the best Earth Day yet!

Go thrift shopping or shop second hand

Fast fashion is so out of style, but you know what isn’t? Thrift shopping! Fast fashion is one of the biggest polluters of our planet next to the oil industry. This year on Earth Day let’s slow down on the instant gratification of shopping and take time to think about our purchases. Are they ethically made? Are the materials sustainably sourced? Reducing your clothing waste isn’t something that happens overnight, so we’re here to help every step of the way!

Make your own seed paper

Support the planet and pollinators this Earth Day by making your own Seed Paper! Materials needed:

  • Recyclable paper (newspaper, egg cartons, or pages out of a journal)
  • blender
  • spatula
  • water
  • wildflower seeds
  • fine strainer
  • paper towels

First, you’ll gather recyclable paper and shred the paper any way you can, so they’re in small pieces that can be easily blended. Next, grab your blender and fill it with your freshly torn paper and then fill it up with water until all the paper is submerged.

Once the blender is filled, turn it on and get to blending until there is no visible evidence of paper left. After you’re done blending, you should have a pulp-like mixture and now it’s time to add in your wildflower seeds of choice (do your research to see which flowers would be best for your area and community)!

Now that you’ve added your wildflower seeds, strain all the water out from the paper pulp. You can use a spatula to press against the paper mixture to get all the extra water out. When the excess water is out you can lay your seed paper out into any shape or form you desire. Let your creation dry overnight and voila! You have made your own seed paper!

Go on a picnic at your local park or in your own backyard

Relax under the sun this year on Earth Day by going on a picnic at your local community park or even setting up shop in your own backyard. Grab some fruits, veggies, finger foods, and great company for an excellent day under the sun!

Visit your local farmer’s market

Shopping at your local farmer’s market has a great impact on your community as well as the environment. By shopping locally (not just for Earth Day) you’re helping your community directly by keeping revenue circulating within as well as creating new jobs. Keeping it local cuts down on transportation costs and creates a personal connection between you and the businesses!

Plant a tree by donating to a nonprofit

One of the best ways to Invest In Our Planet is to plant a tree with a non-profit like our partner, Eden Reforestation Projects. This international non-profit creates an everlasting impact on not only the planet but struggling communities with their “Employ to Plant” approach. With each tree that is being planted, the Eden Reforestation Projects create job opportunities for communities around the world. At EarthHero, we work with them every holiday season to donate trees for every order placed, and within corporate gifting, 1 tree is planted per gift box ordered!
