Almost all cutting boards I have come across that are commercially sold are made of many pieces of wood glued together. Not only is this unhealthy as your food is touched by PVA glue, it is also not a very durable piece as submersion in water could lead the glue joints to fail.
I designed this genre of cutting boards for my wife out of ONE piece of Cherry. This board is offered in the very proportionate 8 inches by 12 out of ONE piece of Cherry wood. It is around three quarter of an inch thick. The width could be within 1/2 an inch under or over 8 inches as not all wide boards are created equal. The length however is a guaranteed 12 inch.
The sides have been rounded by a hand plane. The two ends have a bevelled relief on the lower side for your fingers to easily pick the board up.
It is finished with beeswax and smells great.
A perfect and affordable gift for the ones you truly love.
Cutting Board Care instructions
1. Hand wash only. Do not put in the dishwasher.
2. Do not put very hot pots on the board as this can lead to dryness and cracking.
3. Dry vertically after washing. Do not leave your board lying in a puddle of water all night.
4. Apply olive oil or any other cooking oil twice a month. Apply a liberal coat of oil and leave it on for an hour. Then wipe it dry with a clean cloth.
Breaking it in: The wood grain on a new board is very smooth as it has been hand planed and then sanded before beeswax is applied. This will get rough after the first two washings and is normal.
To make your board smooth again, lightly sand the board after the first two washings, once the board is completely dry and then coat it with olive oil.
After these first two treatments, the board never needs sanding to smoothen the grain again. For this initial break in, use a foam sanding sponge available at most hardware stores. It will smoothen out really fast with a medium grit sponge, which is what I recommend.
