Required Materials List: 1. Space to work 2. Clean, dry, functioning bike 3. Mineral oil — available at pharmacies 4. Three rags 5. Bike pump —...
My family is from a small island in Maine, where our primary mode of transportation is by bike. I have 3 sons, and along with my wife, we maintain 5 bikes that continue to run smoothly in a harsh, salty environment. During the summer I run workshops, helping students maintain, and fix their bikes.
1. Space to work 2. Clean, dry bike 3. Mineral oil — available at pharmacies ~$2 ***Important NOT MINERAL SPIRITS*** we are staying completely non-toxic — can substitute vegetable oil if necessary 4. Three rags 5. Bike pump — ideally with pressure gauge ~$20 6. Eye dropper — if easily available 7. Flat stone or brick to raise seat off the ground when bike is inverted.
Students will need an area suitable for working on their bike. We are using non-toxic mineral oil for lubrication. Some may spill on the ground, so the work surface needs to be suitable for minor spills. Students will need to be able to carefully flip their bikes upside down. Bikes can tip over, and cause injuries. Parents should be available to help if needed.
