Lady Justice was introduced into the Roman pantheon of the Gods by Emperor Augustus.
There are 3 identifying features associated with Lady Justice
- her blindfold a more recent addition in the 16th century when she was depicted in this way. The blindfold represents impartiality
- the scales, a much older depiction, also used in Egyptian symbology where the god of the underworld Anubis used scales to weigh the deceased heart against the feather of truth.
In Lady Justice’s case they represent weighing the evidence and they are equal as the evidence should stand on its own
- the sword, in ancient times the sword represented authority, and denotes that Justice can be swift and final
