A little more about Atovaquone/Proguanil (Generic Malarone)
Atovaquone/Proguanil (Generic Malarone): Things you need to know

Atovaquone/Proguanil is a medication which is used specifically for the prevention of malaria and also the treatment of Malaria in uncomplicated cases. It comes in two strengths, one for adults and the other one for children. Here at SimplyMeds we only offer prevention treatment for adults.

How is it taken?

One tablet is taken 1-2 days before entering the endemic area (area affected with malaria). Then continued as a ONCE DAILY dose whilst in that area. Once you leave the area with malaria you must continue the ONCE DAILY regime for a further 7 days.

How many shall I order?

The number of tablets you need to order will depend on the length of stay in malaria infected areas. But don’t worry, we’ve done all the maths for you! All you need to do is state how long you are spending in the area and we will send out the right amount.

Are there any precautions when using Atovaquone/Proguanil?

As with all medication there are some things you need to be aware of, with atovaquone/proguanil take the following into account:

- This medication is best taken with a meal, so take it with or just after food.

- This medication may make you feel drowsy, if so, do not operate/drive machinery

It is important to remember that malaria prevention medication does not necessarily need to be taken if you are in the country where malaria exists. Some countries have certain areas where malaria prophylaxis is recommended and others which don’t require it. If you are going to be in and out of malaria infested areas then it’s probably best to continue taking it for the duration of your travel. Bear this in mind when selecting the quantity of malaria tablets you order. You can get the most up to date information regarding malaria zones by clicking HERE.

Are there any differences between the generic and branded version, Atovaquone/Proguanil Vs Malarone

These two medications are clinically equivalent, there is no difference in effectiveness or potency. The branded version is usually more expensive as it was the first version of this medication available. The choice comes down to personal preference, whatever you decide SimplyMeds will fulfil your treatment as requested.

There is also a third version available over the counter called Maloff Protect. This comes in standard box sizes and is more expensive than buying the generic treatment via an online pharmacy.

To prevent malaria in adults: ONE TABLET to be taken Daily.

  • Start taking Atovaquone/ Proguanil 1 to 2 days before travelling to an area which has malaria.
  • Continue taking it every day during your stay.
  • Continue taking it for another 7 days after you return from the area.

If you take more Generic Atovaquone/ Proguanil than you should contact a doctor or pharmacist for advice. If possible show them the Generic Atovaquone/ Proguanil pack.

If you forget to take a dose, don’t worry. Just take your next dose as soon as you remember. Then continue your treatment as before. Don’t take extra tablets to make up for a missed dose. Just take your next dose at the usual time.

Keep taking Generic Atovaquone/ Proguanil for 7 days after you return to a malaria-free area. Take the full course of Generic Atovaquone/ Proguanil for maximum protection.
