MATERIALS

According to our ethical values our aim is to make all our precious metal jewellery from recycled precious metals. We have a long in-depth experience in working with different materials allowing us to hand pick the best quality metals for our jewellery.
We use yellow gold, rose gold, white gold, pure gold, platinum, palladium, silver and titanium.
All our jewellery is nickel free. We use only nickel free palladium white gold. The color of the metal is very clear and beautiful in itself, so the jewel does not need a rhodium plating. Naturally this can be added if you wish. Please tell us at checkout if you want your ring to be rhodium plated or contact us through Etsy or by email: info(at)korus.fi. Thank you!

All the diamonds and gemstones that we use are 100% natural. We purchase the diamonds solely from suppliers commited to ethical and moral diamond trade, so all our diamonds are 100 % conflict free.

If you are interested you can read more about the materials we use from the bottom of this page.

SELECTING THE SIZE OF A RING

The main principal, when choosing the size for a ring, is that the ring should easily come out of a finger, yet need a slight pull on the joint. This is to stop the ring from falling of your finger. Picking a ring is a very personal thing to do so you should choose the size according to your own preference. If you then discover that your new ring is of wrong size, please contact us and we will advise you with the best and most cost-efficient way of adjusting the size.

ABOUT THE MATERIALS

Choose a metal that you like

A high quality product comes from high quality materials. When choosing material for a ring, pay attention to the color and purity. Decide what you want and proceed accordingly. The following is a brief description of the most commonly used metals. The stamped purity marks indicate how much precious metal is contained in a precious metal alloy. They indicate the minimum amount of precious metal as measured in parts per thousand, or per mil (‰). The higher the number, the more precious the material is. For example, a gold allow of 585‰ contains 58.5% gold (this means 14k) and a 750‰ allow contains 75% (this means 18k).

Platinum

Platinum is a white, bright metal with a tinge of blue. Its gleaming tone wonderfully highlights the luster of diamonds. Platinum is a very strong and hypoallergenic metal. It is typically the most expensive option for the material of a ring because of the following reasons:

• platinum has a high specific gravity. This means that if you make equally sized rings from gold and platinum, the platinum ring will be heavier.
• platinum can be used as a very pure alloy, in which case the amount of precious metal is high
• working with platinum is a little more challenging than with gold

Indeed, making a platinum ring requires that a goldsmith have a high level of skill and experience in working with platinum. If a goldsmith doesn’t know his or her craft, the result is a disaster, but a platinum ring made by the hands of a skillful goldsmith is simply gorgeous.

Palladium

If you want the lightest colored metal possible, but don’t want to invest in platinum, choose palladium, which belongs to the platinum group of metals. It is lighter in weight and more affordable than platinum, but has a very good color and strength. As with all metals, when using a palladium alloy, its properties are affected by the alloy metals added to it. Ask your goldsmith what kind of alloy he or she uses, and whether it is sure to last when made into a ring.

Gold

Gold is a shiny and soft metal that is distinguished from other metals by its glowing yellow color. Pure gold is quite soft and therefore alloy metals are added to gold to make it into a material that is more suitable for use as jewelry. Different shades of gold alloy can be produced by changing the ratios of alloy materials. The bestknown of these are white gold and red, or rose gold.

Pure gold is most commonly alloyed with silver and copper. Red gold is produced by increasing the portion of copper. Similarly the alloy becomes light in color and slightly green by adding silver.

White gold is achieved by adding palladium or nickel into gold, silver and copper. In Finland and EU nickel-white gold is hardly made any longer, but nevertheless make sure your goldsmith uses white gold that is alloyed with palladium. A low-quality white gold alloy takes on a strong yellow color. Ask your goldsmith to show you what color of alloy he or she uses. Note: A rhodium-plated ring is the color of rhodium, not the color of white gold. The true color of the white gold alloy used in this kind of ring is not apparent until the rhodium gradually wears off.

Silver

Silver is a gleaming white metal with a very beautiful tone. Pure silver does not darken, but silver alloys that are alloyed with copper combines easily with sulphur and sulphur compounds, which is why jewelry darkens readily even in air. As a material for rings, silver is an affordable alternative. However, silver alloys are so soft that rings do not stay beautiful after decades of use.

Titanium

Titanium is a lightweight metal that is light gray in color and has good resistance to wear. It is not a precious metal, which makes the material relatively inexpensive. However, it is very challenging to forge titanium and the process of making a titanium ring is very different from making a precious metal ring. Thus the price of a handmade titanium ring is increased by the amount of labor used in the production of a ring.

Titanium is an allergen-free metal, making it, along with platinum, an excellent alternative for allergic people. However, make sure that pure titanium is used and not titanium alloys because there is no guarantee that the latter is allergen-free. Also, titanium alloys cause problems if you ever have to modify or repair a ring. A ring made of pure titanium can be repaired without any problems. The following are two misconceptions about titanium rings:

• a titanium ring can’t be resized
• a titanium ring can’t be scratched

Yes they can be resized, and yes they can be scratched. They are the same as rings made of precious metals with regard to these properties. When buying a titanium ring, you should also be aware that the first scratches on the ring are more visible than on a gold ring because the titanium is so hard and strong. However, the surface of the ring gradually becomes an even, used matte, and individual scratches no longer catch your attention. Titanium can be made into almost any kind of ring but working with the metal requires familiarity and an exceptionally skilled artisan or smith.
