  • "A lovely property."

We were there during a very wet week so didn't get to enjoy the garden. Hadn't realised that the bathroom was downstairs when we booked, which was probably our fault. Also didn't find the bed very comfortably, this is probably because we are used to a bigger bed. These two reasons are why we give it four stars

However the property was excellent in the owners exceptional grounds with the River Thames at the bottom. Would certainly recommend.

  • "Good location and facilities."

Two anomalies, the fridge was small and a broken shelf made it even less usable and secondly we had to strongly push to get the shower mended - there was no way to turn down the heat. We also felt it was overpriced.

  • "Really fantastic stay at this beautiful cottage!"

The accommodation could not have been more perfect - beautiful restored old building, very nice decorated, immaculately clean throughout and in the most wonderful setting right next to the Thames Path for the fairly short walk in to Wallingford. Our 3 year old son absolutely loved looking at the boats on this secluded part of the river! Could not have been a more perfect couple of days, Sophie is a wonderful kind host and extremely responsive to any questions we had on the apartment. Thanks and we’ll be back! :)

  • "Property was beautiful and thoroughly enjoyed our stay over Xmas 2021."

The owners installed and decorated a lovely Xmas tree for which drew a cheer from the kids as we came down the drive in the car. Right on the Thames, perfect for walks and exploring the nearby Wallingford town. Would definitely stay again.

  • "This cottage was absolutely beautiful."

It was very clean and very well appointed. The river is at the bottom of the huge garden so we walked along the river path to Wallingford which was lovely. A very pleasant short stay

  • "A lovely comfortable property but I don’t think it qualifies for a top rating from Sykes."

That rating denotes perfection and whilst this property could be brought up to that standard with some small changes, at the moment it is not. However I would happily return if I was having another holiday in this area.

  • "Absolutely wonderful place to stay."

The house is so clean and well equipped, and the garden just amazing. The communication with the house manager was excellent too. We've had a fabulous holiday in a lovely part of the UK.

  • "We absolutely loved staying here, so much that I've already booked another week."

Our children (9 & 12) enjoyed it so much they complained that we were going out too much, they want to come back just to stay in the property and play in the garden!! My youngest has asked if we can buy it :) The only incredibly slight quibbles I have are that one of the single beds is very squeaky - it caused the only argument over the week and the fridge isn't the best (make sure it's on a v. cold setting before you put your stuff in).

  • "The property is immaculate and equipped to a very high standard."

The owners, John and Trish, are charming and so helpful and friendly. What made our stay even better was the short walk through their lovely garden to the riverside where we could take a stroll along the Thames Path into Wallingford. A very comfortable and enjoyable stay and we'll certainly make a return visit.

About the location

WALLINGFORD

Dorchester 4.7 miles; Didcot 6.3 miles; Abingdon 10.7 miles; Oxford 13.2 miles; Henley-on-Thames 13.6 miles; Reading 14.6 miles.

Wallingford has a history dating back to King Alfred and it was at Wallingford that William the Conqueror crossed the Thames with his army, before marching on London. Wallingford Castle was built at his command to cement it's royal importance, and during its lifetime has played host to many royal visitors including King John, Henry Vl and Edward the Black Prince, to name but a few. Unfortunately, what remains of it now is only impressive earth works but some of the stones were re-used to build the St Mary-le-More Church which can be found near the centre of the town. Wallingford has been host to many different trades and industries during the centuries, including malting and iron foundries, but it was always a market town and still is to this day with a weekly market held every Friday where you can buy everything from unique gifts to fruit and fish. However it's connection with fictional detectives and quaint country villages may have started when the author Agatha Christie took up residence in Winterbrook House and lived there with her husband for over thirty years. Creator of Miss Marple and Hercule Poirot, she was president to the Sinodum Players who regularly present plays at the now converted Corn Exchange in the market square. Look up what may be showing during your visit. In later years Wallingford has become more recognisable as "Causton" in the very popular TV series "Midsomer Murders". Walks and even driving trails for this often watched series can be followed by using the leaflets available from the tourist information centre, shown in the programme as Causton Town Hall; with the town square a focal point. You never know you may even become an "extra" if filming is taking place on the day you take a stroll around the town. A short drive from Wallingford and you can be in Henley-on-Thames with its river walks, pubs, shops and restaurants. "Henley Royal Regatta" takes place every year at the end of June and attracts thousands of visitors. Held over five days this is seen as part of the social season. Oxford with its dreaming spires is not only home to one of England's greatest universities but is certainly a city to explore while staying in this part of Oxfordshire. Wallingford is a perfect location for a holiday with a difference, a lovely town with a warm welcome.
