Summary
1851. Wealthy businessman Jacob Welland is dying of consumption and implores private detective Laetitia Rodd to find his beloved brother, whom he has not seen for 10 years.
An impoverished Oxford scholar who left college to live as a wandering hermit, Joshua Welland has been spotted in a gypsy camp, where it was rumoured he was learning great secrets. Her search reconnects Laetitia with a couple from her past, but then a murder is committed. Laetitia's friend, Inspector Blackbeard of Scotland Yard, dismisses her talk of gypsies and secrets, but Laetitia is convinced something sinister lurks in this peaceful landscape.

I really enjoyed this full and complicated mystery
Excellent story, marvellous narrator. Thank you. I would love to find more audio books by this author read by the same narrator.

Surprisingly good
Really enjoyed this ‘costume drama’ crime listen. Good plot with some humour - and well narrated.

Mostly enjoyable
Generally enjoyable - my only issue is with the accent of the lawyer Patrick Flint who is is supposed to be from Co Antrim but sounds as if he is from the very south of Ireland - think a supposed Geordie sounding like a Somerset farmer 🤣

Got bit lost
Enjoyable light romp with twists , I don't often get to guess the murders, sometimes too many names , have to think who is who

A bit boring. Not as good as last one.
i bought this because the first was good. This one was too long drawn out a tale. Seriously disappointed in narrator's decision to interpret the probable mode of speech of an educated member of the established church from the north coast of Ireland in the stereotypical argot attributed to stage-Irish Dublin workmen. A pity. This narrator can be very good. A bit of online research would have been a good idea.

Not as good as the 1st - the villain is obvious
The narrator is excellent. The story is pretty weak and nowhere as many twists and turns as The Secret of Wishtide. The murderer stands out like a sore thumb!

Good narration, boring story
The main character doesn’t contribute much to the story. There’s no real investigation. Things just happen around her.

Easy listen, story which galloped along
The story was an easy listen and slightly predictable. But if you can allow for that it was an enjoyable few hours worth of a story that galloped along.

Easy listening
A very easy listen to a enjoyable book. Good story well read. I figured out the culprit quite early on in the book. This didn't detract from my enjoyment though.
