I've been to Unawatuna 4 times/years and that beautiful place changes for worse.
There is new oversized monster-hotel, water scooters, loud music, fireworks, higher prices...
In last 2 years 90% of tourists are Russians - some restaurants are only in russian.
Most likely, I am not going back.

Unawatuna beach has beautiful water and golden sand.
Unawatuna beach has beautiful water and golden sand. The part of the beach where I visited, the ocean gets quite deep very fast, and the waves seem to cary you in quite easily. I haven't seen any lifeguards or flags that would indicate the wave's condition, but local people were very kind to give information.
If you like hiking, the city has a nice trail to a beach called Jungle beach. Trough the same trail, you can pass by the Japanese Peace Pagoda, and if you are lucky you might see monkeys and lizards. The trail is more or less 40 min one way.
The restaurants from the hotels are very much on the coast, sometimes seems to close from the beach. But the food quality is good and affordable, and lots of these restaurants offer alcohol.
I stayed one day in Unawatuna and it felt enough time to discover what the city has to offer.

I heard that this used to be a great beach.
I heard that this used to be a great beach. Unfortunately I do not think it is today. Very exploited and there are many beach places renting out sunbeds. They can get away with having (very) crappy toilets because there are new tourists every day, they do not need a good review.
Having dinner on the beach was a strange experience, started out good but then a large company came and occupied the space next to us, ordering champagne, oysters and lobsters like there was no tomorrow, and we were forgotten about.
There are plenty of other beaches in Sri Lanka that are much better.

It was one of the best beaches in Sri Lanka but the most crowded one.
Also several gaming water sports are in this beach.
The water is clean but a lot of cafes and restaurants in the area.
We didn't like the service in one of those cafes. They tried to lied us with the bill and the owner was very rude.
It is typical that kind of populated beach areas with a lot of restaurants and SPA services, as well as a night life..
Lovely little guesthouse off the beaten path. About a half hour walk into the city, or quick tuktuk ride. Wifi is quite good, nice outside areas to relax, and all the facilities were functioning properly. Cold water only in the budget rooms, but understandable for the price. The family that runs it were lovely, and made us feel right at home, answering any questions we had about the city, or just chatting with us about Sri Lankan culture. Overall great value for money, and we would welcome the chance to come back
Fantastic stay at Lara’s Place. Stayed in the penthouse with incredible huge wrap around balcony with stunning views over Unawatuna and the Indian Ocean. Was so peaceful and serene on the hill away from the noise of main beach. Lara the owner is such a great host, so helpful and accomodating with any requests, organising tuks tuks making recommendations etc. he made us feel so welcome and relaxed. Oh and the Sri Lankan breakfasts were so yummy and generous. Best egg hoppers I had during my 4 weeks in Sri Lanka.
I recently had an amazing hotel stay at Serenity Boutique - Unawatuna in Sri Lanka. The hospitality was exceptional, and the staff went above and beyond to make my experience memorable. The room was spacious, clean, and offered breathtaking views of the surroundings. The on-site dining was a culinary delight, featuring a variety of delicious local dishes. The hotel’s attention to detail and commitment to guest satisfaction truly made my stay unforgettable. I highly recommend it for anyone visiting Sri Lanka.
The hotel staff was amazingly considerate, like everybody in Sri Lanka. They helped us with every single request. Moreover, the hotel facilities were really nice, a decent swimming pool, a fine restaurant with different options of meat, seafood, and vegetarian meals, that you could enjoy while relaxing on a comfortable beachbed. The room was also great, with a jacuzzi and a stunning view to the ocean. The beach was idyllic and the hotel rented a surfboard, which was good for beginners to learn how to surf.
Agnus unawatuna is by far the best hotel we’ve stayed in sri lanka. The price you pay for it is totally worth it and even less than what you would normally pay for the luxuries it offers. The rooms are big and beautiful, the service is amazing and the views are spectacular. It has an infinity pool on top of the roof that offers what must be the most amazing views of all sri lanka. The food was amazing as well and I asure you it is worth every cent. I recommend it without any doubt.
Kaju Green was my last stop of my Sri Lanka trip and truly the best way to end an adventurous time; it was the perfect spot to calm down and relax. The premises are a true dream if you are a nature and animal lover. The lodge promotes a sustainable lifestyle and you will definitely feel connected to nature.
Ruwan and the team are amazing, they will make sure you feel taken care of and they are there to support you in any needs. Will definitely come back.
We stay in this hotel for a 3th time. It is a small hotel with beautiful garden and amazing view over the ocean and the waves crashing in the rocks. We stay in a cabana, which has a very comfortable bed, spacious bathroom and large furnished veranda with view to the garden and the ocean. The staff are very friendly and provide perfect service. Very clean and properly kept.
Beach is good for walking. Unawatuna is very short tuk-tuk drive away.
The location of this hotel cannot be beaten. We had a great two nights staying at this hotel, finding it incredible relaxing and the perfect place to end our holiday. Rooms were large with all the amenities you require, there is a restaurant that serves delicious meals, and turtles swimming in the sea which you can see from the hotel. We particularly enjoyed watching the turtles as the sun was setting with a sun downer!
This accommodation is the best we've experienced in Sri Lanka. The rooms are clean, stylish and you can see an attention to details which is often missing in other places. The breakfast is very good and you can choose from a wide selection. It has a beautiful garden, it's like having a mini jungle next to your room. Close to the beach, restaurants and shops.
Fab location, right at the top of the Main Street in Unawatuna and about 8/9 minutes from the beach. Also above a coffee shop that served some of the best coffee I had on my trip to Sri Lanka! Very clean and spacious rooms with big balcony’s and nice bathrooms. The staff were so kind and welcoming and did all our washing for very cheap. Great hotel.
+design, interior absolutely beautiful
+located near the beach
+super clean
+comfy bed and you can make the room dark (from 10 hotels in Sri Lanka this was the first one)
+super lovely staff, they helped with everything you need and further more
+absolutely fair price for the value
For me it was by far the best hotel on my whole sri lanka trip
a true sample of excellent hospitality!
Without a doubt one of the favorite hotels, I stayed at during my time in Sri Lanka! Upon arrival we were warmly welcomed by the staff and general manager, our names were mentioned on the board and we were upgraded to the sea view Room. The staff was extremely friendly
We like friendly and professional staff especially the front manager. There is a nice view from the top of the hill from the roof top terrace and second floor rooms. Besides 2 pools hotel has an area on the main Unawatuna beach and free transfer by tuk-tuk. We also noticed a great dinner for Christmas night
The friendly and efficient staff, the room balcony view , sunset view on Unawatuna Beach.
The clean spacious room with good A/C.
the breakfast all the fresh fruit platter, and the sri lankan omelette, fresh mix fruit juice.
The 10min walking distance from the beach of Unawatuna.
Good sized, clean room in a good location to reach the various beaches in the Unawatuna area.
The included breakfast was good, but basic if you're used to receiving the traditional Sri Lankan full works.
This is a really nice hotel with a great location. Just a few steps to Unawatuna beach, close to jungle beach and around 20 min in tuk tuk to Galle Fort. Big rooms and a nice pool area.
The hotel is much better than most others in Sri Lanka. It’s not perfect but you are unlikely to find something better for the price. Close to the beach, large bed, quite clean.
