Have you heard of the envelope system for finances? It seems to be a pretty good plan, but the idea of hauling around envelopes isn't too appealing. I imagine they would start falling apart instantly upon being thrown into my bag. And what about change? I'd be scrounging for it at the bottom of my purse along with sticky peppermints and thread.
Being on an oilcloth kick lately, it seemed perfect to whip up a better type of system since the oilcloth is sturdy, but sewable, and doesn't fray so I don't need to do lots of hemming/seams. I came up with this tutorial and thought I'd share it for a meager sum for all you thrifty types.
The PDF shows you how to sew six separate pockets with zippers hold your money allotted for each spending area along with any change or receipts.
The inside holds your driver's license, library card, bank card, etc. Note each zippered pocket has a vinyl window for assigning your categories.
A larger pocket in back for whatevs. I got the checkbook in here, but a notepad, shopping list, etc. can go here.
This makes a great gift for newlyweds, young adults moving out, and anybody else who likes to keep track of spending and coupon cohorts.

The envelope system is a very basic – but effective – approach to budgeting. To employ the system you divide your income into various spending categories, and then create and fund an envelope for each one. You then spend out of the appropriate envelopes until the money is gone.

Hey! Do you want to make these to sell? Well, go right ahead. All you have to do is purchase the pattern and you're set. I don't require anything else. A shout out would be nice, but it's not necessary :)
