ABOUT OUR RECYCLED COTTON
We are very proud and passionate to supply maker communities with recycled cotton, and we'd love to tell you more about how our recycled cotton is created. By taking textile waste that is otherwise headed for landfills, we get to do our part to encourage more sustainable and zero-waste production models. Pre-consumer textile waste is grouped into colour categories, then blended to create a uniform colour that doesn't require the application of dyes. This recycling and colour grouping gives the rope minuscule speckles (or freckles) that add to its beauty and hint at the ways in which waste has been repurposed, and granted new life. Made from pre-consumer textile waste, this recycled cotton is not only as soft as it gets—but it ticks the sustainability box as well. We’re happy any time we can offer a fibre that has been granted new life by repurposing and recycling.

SIZING:

The length on each spool depends on the thickness of rope or string. Here is a breakdown of approximate lengths depending on rope/string

-20mm triple strand comes in pre-cut bundles of 16 feet

-12mm triple strand comes in pre-cut bundles of 32 feet

-7mm single strand comes in 1kg rolls with approximately 300-400 feet on each

-5mm single strand comes in 1kg rolls with approximately 400-500 feet on each

-4mm triple strand comes in 1kg rolls with approximately 500-600 feet on each

-3mm triple strand comes in 1kg rolls with approximately 800-1000 feet on each

-3mm single strand comes in 1kg rolls with approximately 800-1000 feet on each

-2mm single strand comes in 500g rolls with approximately 800-1000 feet on each

-1mm 2-ply comes as a bundle of 5 small rolls with 325 feet on each (so total amount is approximately 1625 feet)


A LITTLE HELPFUL VOCABULARY:

“String” is a term typically used to refer to single strand (sometimes called ‘single twist’) cotton.

“Rope” or “cord” are terms typically used to refer to triple strand (sometimes called “triple twist” or “triple ply”) cotton.

“Fringe” is the term typically used to describe string or rope in its smooth, brushed out form (see listing photos of the edges of coasters or macrame hanging feathers for examples of what this fringe looks like).

THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN TRIPLE STRAND AND SINGLE STRAND:

Triple strand cotton rope/cord is made up of three separate sections that are twisted together to form the shape of the rope. It looks more like a cable or braid. These three strands can be separated and unraveled to create a slightly crimped effect (say, in the tail of a plant hanger or along the edges of a wall hanging).

Single strand has one solo section that is gently twisted to form string. It can’t be divided easily into sections, and it will only ever create a straight fringe.


What you need to know before purchasing our triple strand ropes is this: THEY ARE SOFT. They feel differently than other triple strand cotton rope products on the market and offer an incomparable versatility. The difference is that they too brush out into a soft, smooth fringe—just like our single strand recycled cotton. This dual function is what we most love about our triple strands.


WHICH TYPE OF COTTON IS RIGHT FOR YOU?:

FOR BEGINNERS, try 4mm triple strand. It’s the most versatile cotton product across our collection. In the beginning, it’s easier to form, tighten, and understand your knots with a thicker cord.

FOR PLANT HANGERS, Choose 3mm triple strand (for small plants) or 4mm triple strand (for medium plants).

FOR HAMMOCKS, choose either 4mm triple strand, 5mm single strand, or 7mm single strand

FOR CHUNKY WALL HANGINGS, choose 7mm single strand

FOR MEDIUM TO LARGE WALL HANGINGS, choose 7mm single strand, 5mm single strand, or 4mm triple strand

FOR SMALL TO MEDIUM WALL HANGINGS, choose 3mm single strand, 3mm triple strand, or 4mm triple strand

FOR LEAVES AND FEATHERS, choose 3mm single strand or 5mm single strand

FOR COASTERS, choose 3mm single strand or 3mm triple strand

FOR MARKET BAGS, choose 4mm triple strand

FOR KEYCHAINS, JEWERY, and CHARMS, choose 3mm single strand, 3mm triple strand, 2mm single strand, or 1mm 2-ply

FOR WRAPPED RAINBOWS, Choose 20mm triple strand or 12mm triple strand (for base) and 1mm 2-ply, 2mm single strand, or 3mm single/triple strand for cotton wrapping mediums. Alternatively, wrapping fibres can be very diverse: our sari ribbons, chiffon ribbons, velvet ribbons and fuzzy ribbons will make beautiful, tactile additions.
