Summary

The Emperor needs necromancers.

The Ninth Necromancer needs a swordswoman.

Gideon has a sword, some dirty magazines, and no more time for undead nonsense.

Tamsyn Muir’s Gideon the Ninth unveils a solar system of swordplay, cut-throat politics, and lesbian necromancers. Her characters leap out of the audio, as skillfully animated as arcane revenants. The result is a heart-pounding epic science fantasy.

Brought up by unfriendly, ossifying nuns, ancient retainers, and countless skeletons, Gideon is ready to abandon a life of servitude and an afterlife as a reanimated corpse. She packs up her sword, her shoes, and her dirty magazines, and prepares to launch her daring escape. But her childhood nemesis won’t set her free without a service.

Harrowhark Nonagesimus, Reverend Daughter of the Ninth House and bone witch extraordinaire, has been summoned into action. The Emperor has invited the heirs to each of his loyal Houses to a deadly trial of wits and skill. If Harrowhark succeeds she will be become an immortal, all-powerful servant of the Resurrection, but no necromancer can ascend without their cavalier. Without Gideon’s sword, Harrow will fail, and the Ninth House will die.

Of course, some things are better left dead.

Critic reviews

"Tamsyn Muir's absorbing storytelling and Moira Quirk's immersive performance create a richly imagined fantasy world.... Quirk is at turns antagonistic, vulnerable, and hopelessly helpful as she characterizes all the participants and stewards of Canaan House.... Listeners will eagerly anticipate the trilogy's next installment." (AudioFile Magazine)

Vibrantly modern genre fiction with gay to spare

Tamsyn Muir’s tale of lesbian necromancers in space is Warhammer 40K by way of Tumblr; Agatha Christie as told by the only girl in your high school’s anime club; a Reylo fic MST3K’d by its own narrator. A wild premise of humanity’s necromantic far future is anchored firmly in the now by Muir’s deeply modern dialogue and prose, treating the reader/listener to bomb blasts of hilarious and vulgar prose with just enough space between to disarm you for the next one. Moira Quirk’s narration is sublime—this is a real actress who seems just as into the achingly goth adventures of these weird space teens as you are, and her commitment to giving each character a unique voice is commendable. Quirk reminds one of a friend who just ran in the door and said “you won’t BELIEVE what happened today”.

Great fun. Love the characters.

Weird, different and enjoyable in all the ways I want. A story full of dirty goth loaners, dick swinging and murder.

Slow start but worth persevering

Moira Quirke’s performance alone would be worth the cost of the audiobook. The story came alive and I lost all track of time listening to it.

Arcaney Mistborn-style Novel

Great narrator and hilarious delivery. First two acts were frankly boring and there was very little world-building, and none of the characters except the main two stood out or were at all memorable. Great ending, and I overall enjoyed it, but I am unlikely to read the next ones.

i was gripped

I save 5 stars for true greats, but this was an enjoyable.book. it was a quirky and original concept. characters were not fully rounded, but were far from being 2 dimensional either .... and there is something about Gideon that just made me root for her. THe plot eas well paced. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

A fantastic ‘read’ that’s very well narrated

A really enjoyable book with great characters and fascinating relationships. The mix of pretentious archaic language with colourful modern expressions and insults feels very fresh and brings everything to life, despite their world being as grimdark as the likes of Warhammer 40,000. Unless colourful language offends you, I’d recommend this to anyone.

Really Really Really Good

I listened to the whole story in 3 days. It's that good. The voice actress is amazing at bringing each character to life and the plot had me so hooked I am already certain I will re-listen this in the future.
