Crochet Poppy Pattern
This field poppy is designed to be as realistic as possible, featuring long stitches replicating the delicate striations of the petals, slightly uneven edges to the petals and the characteristic cross of black in the centre.
For a poppy approximately 9cm or 3½" across, use DK (light worsted weight, Category 3) yarn and a 3.5mm hook.
For a larger 14cm or 5½" poppy, use Aran weight (worsted weight, Category 4) yarn and a 4.5mm hook.
This pattern is available in both UK and US crochet terminology. Both files will be available for you on purchase and you can choose whichever you prefer to use.
At a number of points in the pattern there are notes on how you can alter and customize the flower to your preferences, so that if you are making a group of them, each poppy will be individual, just like in nature.
Note that I would not suggest this as a beginner pattern - it contains some more unusual methods and stitches, including US triple / UK double-treble crochet, loop stitches and the 'magic' adjustable ring.
The pattern does of course come with my full support! If you have any difficulties, please contact me.
I originally designed this poppy using Twool British wool twine, and you will receive excellent results with this yarn. The last two pictures above show the poppies I made using this pattern for the Twool stand at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show! Twool is approximately Aran weight - see www.twool.co.uk for more information on this wonderful, sustainable product.
Please note that the petals, seed head and bud shown in the last two photos are not part of this pattern - it is (currently) just the flower with stalk.
