My Juliet Rose Soliflore is a single note, single species Rosa centifolia perfume with in house absolutes and enfleurage extraits. It catches the adolescent dawn of this Globe: Rose de Mai, hundred petaled rose, May rose, painter's rose, cabbage rose, before the sun's rays have a chance to steal her fragrant oils. KADAMBA SOLIFLORE: Kadamba, Kadam, Cadamba, Burflower-tree, Laran, Leichhardt pine, an orange pom pom of a flower by any of these names smells so sweet, so powdery, of such ineffable complexity. Like an incense compound of marigold, patchouli, roses, nag champa, kula gardenia, parijat, sandalwood powder and strange spices, all pressed into a hetereogeneous mass that looks different from every angle. It is hard to believe this is the scent of a single flower. It seems to share facets with heliotrope, orris, "amber," the deep red-purple fruit of Jasminum grandiflorum, herbs, tonka, cloves, black cherries and Daphne odora, while eschewing them all. This is a single note natural perfume from the flowers of Neolamarckia cadamba. It comes from several absolutes that I sourced from India and aged from between 1 and 5 years each (and yes, I will be growing my own Neolamarckia cadamba tree from seed here in De Luz, but it will be years before it blesses me with its flowers).
GEL ROSE SOLIFLORE: Rose species natural perfume. Single note, single species Rosa gallica perfume with in house rose absolutes and enfleurage extraits. Clotted rose essence. Gel Rose is a vivid rose soliflore with a tangy green abstract fruit top note akin to starfruit. This perfume contains my extracts of a single species: Rosa gallica, one of the most ancient extant roses. Anything but fossilized or dusty, Gel Rose vibrates with a spirit not attenuated by the passing of time, but pressurized, congealed into a quivering mass of burgundy-pink-green velveteen gel.
VANILLA SOLIFLORE. Single note vanilla perfume with in house vanilla absolutes, tinctures, and SCO2 extracts: Vanilla planifolia, Vanilla tahitensis; Bourbon vanilla, Madagascar vanilla, Hawaiian vanilla. A rich and unadulterated celebration of the gourmand touchstone in all its fruity, sweet, boozy complexity.
BANANA DREAM. A frothy banana soliflore with notes of fresh bananas, banana cream, banana whip, and banana smoothie. This solid perfume features my in house enfleurage and absolutes, including those of pink jasmine (Jasminum polyanthum), banana magnolia (Magnolia figo), gardenia (Gardenia jasminoides), ylang ylang (Canango odorata), and blue Java ice cream banana, all grown in the Wild Veil Perfume gardens.

WILD VEIL • Natural perfume grown in Vermont. Handmade aromatic extracts, including enfleurage, absolutes, resinoids, and tinctures.

Welcome! My name is Abby Hinsman and I am a natural perfumer specializing in whole plant compositions from my own extractions of exquisite natural materials, many of which I grow organically, or sustainably collect in the old growth hemiboreal forest at my home.

In my product pages you will often find photographs I have taken of my homemade enfleurage, tinctures, absolutes, and resinoids, as well as the aromatic plants, that provided key notes in the composition. I draw all of the colored pencil artwork for Wild Veil, and I photograph products in my home, organic gardens, and in the wild. All fragrance orders come beautifully gift wrapped with pressed and cured flowers from my organic gardens, along with a handwritten note. Many of my perfumes come with handwritten labels, too!

I envision this shop as a virtual encounter with natural aromas, as you tour my cabinets and gardens. Please enjoy the roses, lilacs, honeysuckle, peonies, gardenias, plumeria, violets, tobacco, herbs, taiga, floodplains, and more. And don't forget to stop and smell.

ABOUT NATURAL PERFUMERY
Natural perfumery is the art of creating alchemical fragrances from purely natural sources such as organic, ethically harvested, and wildcrafted essential oils, absolutes, flora, butters, and waxes. Perfumes are handmade to order to ensure vitality and potency. Many of my perfumes are purely botanical and vegan (with the exception of my solid perfumes, which incorporate raw organic beeswax).

I use alchemy to compose my creations using exquisite natural ingredients sourced from all of the world, or collected from my own backyard. This means that while every item is unique, there may be slight variations within a perfume depending on the season and the source of the raw materials.

Intimate and subtle, natural perfumes wear close to the body. They radiate their fragrance for a few hours before softening completely into the skin. Natural perfumes often smell quite different in the bottle than on your body. Make sure to test a fragrance on your skin before deciding whether or not it is for you! As your skin warms the wax or oil emulsion, the plant essences mingle with your particular biochemistry, activating a unique scent [*green alchemy*]. For me, part of the pleasure lies in reapplication, periodically renewing your sensual bond with organic matter. Botanical oils contain wonderful therapeutic benefits, and so you may find a blend rejuvenates not only your senses, but mind and body. My perfumes are handcrafted from essential oils, absolutes, CO2 extracts, and other botanical compounds, wild harvested or organic when possible. They do not contain preservatives, fragrance oils, artificial colors or flavorings, SLS (Sodium Lauryl Sulfate), or parabens of any kind.

HOW TO EXPERIMENT
If you are unsure whether a product is right for you, I recommend starting with a small or sample size before committing to a full size.

SHELF LIFE
All of my creations use only fresh ingredients and are free of SLS, parabens, preservatives, artificial colors or flavorings, and fragrance or synthetic oils. Hair and skin care products should retain their aromatic and therapeutic properties for a year or more, kept in a cool, dry, and dark area. Natural perfumes never spoil, but they may lose their top notes over time, while the base notes may deepen.

PRECAUTIONS
Plant essences are generally non-toxic and non-irritating, but they can cause sensitization in some individuals. I recommend patch testing a small area such as the inner wrist before full application, especially if you are unsure if you have a sensitivity to any natural oils, butters, or waxes. If you have a known allergy concern, please read the ingredients and notes listed, and if you are still unsure, let me know.

SALES, RETURNS, ETC.
All sales are final. No returns, refunds, or exchanges.
Due to the nature of my perfumes and for safety and hygienic reasons, I cannot accept returns. Not liking a scent is not a valid reason for a refund; this is what samples are for. I discourage blind buying natural perfumes, enfleurage, and extrait from enfleurage, especially if you are new to these. Please sample before buying in larger sizes. Thank you!

During the summer months I refrigerate orders prior to shipping. If you have ordered something meltable, such as a deodorant, pomade, solid perfume, or cream, I recommend retrieving your package promptly upon receipt, especially if you live in a warm climate. I am not responsible for temperature during transit nor after delivery.

Please note some settling is normal with natural products (for example, makeup and deodorants). You are accepting this when you commit to purchase. If you know that you are reactive or allergic to particular ingredients, please check list of ingredients in the product listing and, for fragrances, the "notes." You are responsible for patch testing your product to: 1) ensure safety of use; and 2) screen for known sensitivities or allergies. The inner wrist is typically a safe area for patch testing. And, if you have concerns about an allergy, please contact me prior to placing your order to ensure the product will be safe for your use. I will work with you to customize the right product for you.

Frequently asked questions

Do you accept custom order requests?

Yes, custom orders and sizes are available upon request. Please message me using Etsy's Conversation feature.

I'm new to natural perfume. What should I expect? How should I approach your shop?

Sample widely. Keep an open mind and nose. If you're used to scents at the fragrance counter, you will be in for a recalibration of your sniffer. A "sweet" natural perfume is going to be much earthier and markedly less sweet than what counts as "sweet" in the saccharine, dessert-y, gourmand saturated landscape of contemporary corporate perfumery. Flowery is not necessarily floral, and you may actually love lavender and patchouli.

How long do your fragrances last?

Longevity will vary from fragrance to fragrance, and person to person. The main factors are fixatives in the composition, and the skin chemistry of the wearer. Generally, you can expect natural perfumes to last from a few hours to several days (on clothing). The longest lasting fragrances tend to be musks, with animal musks outlasting botanical musks by days, even years. A good botanical musk, though, will wear for several days on scarves and sweaters.

To extend the longevity of my fragrances, I offer "fixatives." Fixatives function as primers, creating a barrier that slows the absorption of a perfume into your skin. Simply search "fixative" in my shop, and they will come up.

I opened the bottle and don't like the smell. What should I do?

Apply the fragrance to your skin. I recommend the inner wrist for this. Natural perfumes are truly dynamic creatures, and will often smell dramatically different in the bottle than on your skin. On your skin, it has a chance to warm up, mix with your own chemistry, and move through the stages.

What are the perfume stages?

Perfumes unfold over time, based on varying evaporation rates in their aromatic oils. "Stages" are used to describe their wear. To truly understand the character of a perfume, it is important to see it through the three stages, from beginning to end. The first stage is dominated by top notes, the most fleeting, volatile elements. Top notes generally dissipate and recede after the first few minutes, when the fragrance enters the second stage. Here the heart or middle notes come forth. This second stage can last up to an hour before the final stage. This is the dry down or dryout phase, when base notes deepen and complexify the entire composition. I recommend letting a perfume wear at least an hour before deciding it's not for you.

Which lasts longer? Liquid or solid perfumes?

This will vary from person to person, but generally the solid perfumes have greater longevity given that the beeswax traps aroma chemicals and slows their evaporation rate. That said, the solid perfumes may seem like sleepers, growing in intensity over time, whereas the liquid perfumes open with a bang and evaporate more rapidly.

What's the sillage of natural perfumes? What about the projection?

Sillage refers to the scent trail left in the air by the wearer. In natural perfumes, sillage tends to be subtle and intimate. When compared to the sillage of corporate perfumes which can be nauseating, stagnant and one dimensional, the sillage of natural perfumes is often complex and dynamic.

Projection is how far out a perfume projects from the wearer. Again, natural perfumes are intimate affairs. Generally only you and those intimately near you will catch wind of your fragrance. Unlike their corporate counterparts which can be overpowering walls of scent, natural perfumes rarely project beyond a foot,

What are your concentrations?

Perfumes, Colognes, Fragrances: 40-60%
Skin and hair care: 1-5%
