Although plant based dyes are considered safer for the environment, many plant based dyes require the use of dissolved metal oxides as the mordant to help the dye stick to fabric and to alter the shade. These metal mordants, such as copper, tin, iron , aluminium and chrome are toxic to people & the environment especially if the dyeing is on a commercial scale. The dyes I use are either eco-friendly synthetic non-toxic dyes , using household salt or vinegar as a mordant or natural dyes which do not require the use of a mordant at all- so if you do decide to choose silk dyed with plant-based dye over eco-friendly synthetic dyes be sure to read the small print on the mordants used.

My silk ribbons are 100% silk and the dyes I use are described by the manufacturer as eco-friendly synthetic dyes which are non-toxic, as determined by the Consumer Product Safety Commission and can be safely flushed through both sewer and septic systems. The mordants I use are household salt and vinegar, the exact same I use on my food ! The remaining dyes I use are natural dyes and used without any mordant at all .

There is the option to purchase a wooden bobbin for your silk ribbon in the drop-down menu in each listing. If you have selected this option the bobbin will be the appropriate size for the width of ribbon selected (ranging from 1/2 inch width to 4 inch width) and hold the appropriate amount of yards of ribbon - as selected . The contemporary wooden bobbins are made from sustainable wood and are unstained,smooth and crafted from pale wood.
