The series premiered to rave reviews and fan response in 2019, and returned for an equally lauded second season in April 2020. The third and final season premiered in January 2022, also to high acclaim.

Gervais was first asked to host the Golden Globes® awards ceremony in 2010, making him the first host of the Golden Globes® since 1995. The broadcast was seen by an estimated 250 million viewers. Gervais has since hosted the Golden Globes® in 2011, 2012, and 2016 prior to his most recent appearance as host for the 5th time in 2020.
