Paper quilling is the art of rolling strips of paper around a needle-like tool. The rolled circles are then shaped and glued together to create art.

Where did this unique art form originate? Some of the first quillers were probably the monks and nuns in Europe. They would have had access to the precious materials needed for quilling. Reliquaries embellished with paper scroll work can still be found in European museum.
By the late 18th century, quilling became more popular among fashionable ladies. They would have used either a feather quill or their hat pin to roll the paper. Boarding schools listed "filigree" as one of the subjects taught. Patterns were also available in ladies magazines of the time. Among the items decorated were; tea caddies, cribbage boards, fireplace screen, handbags, and even furniture.
Quilling eventually spread to the American Colonies. Here, boarding schools listed "quill-work" among the subjects taught Some of the finest examples found in museums are sconces.
During the late 1800's quillings' popularity faded. Not until the mid-20th century for reasons unknown, quilling made a comeback and is still popular today.
