Carmen La Cubana
Carmen La Cubana
Carmen La Cubana is a sizzling new musical featuring Bizet’s classic score flavoured with authentic Cuban styles.
Inspired by Oscar Hammerstein II’s Broadway hit Carmen Jones, Christopher Renshaw (The King and I) directs this UK premiere, with new orchestrations by Tony Award winner Alex Lacamoire (Hamilton), mixing opera with salsa, mambo, rumba and cha-cha-cha and including musical favourites such as Habanera.
Featuring a large company of singers, dancers and musicians, Carmen La Cubana is a sultry take on one of the most famous operas ever created, set against the simmering turmoil of Revolution in Cuba, 1958.

Carmen is a great opera. Resetting the story in Cuba in the years of the revolution gives it a more modern touch - and a very fitting one. The story was great, and the delivery fantastic, from the singers, to the ballets, to the set. The fact that it was sung and spoken in Spanish (with a real Cuban accent!) made the performance even more convincing. The surtitles in English were, though, slightly disappointing, because they translated half of what was said!

Lost the subtitle screens for part of the performance but overall I’d recommend the show.

The show itself was a sublime, 5 star exhilarating , thrilling experience, in fact everything we've come to expect from Cuban performers. The Cuban rhythms were intoxicating , the dancing superb and the set stunning. Highly recommended . See below for our highly disappointing problem with the seats.

Wow, this show was awesome. Best of both worlds, music, dancing, opera and theatrical production! An amazing host of talents. Carmen was definitely the star of the show. I'd highly recommend it to anyone. Just book quickly as closes next weekend. After the show I felt like having a Cuban experience, but no venue nearby. I'm planning on going to Cuba next year and can't wait to explore the culture, salsa dancing, food and history of this beautiful country! Viva Cuba !!!

Brilliant. My only criticism is that I would have liked more couples dancing the salsa.

Brilliant show- full of dance, colour and song. I didn’t expect a storyline as such as these dance musicals rarely have one but it was refreshing to see one, even though it wasn’t a happy ending. The only downside was the whole play was spoken in Cuban/Spanish and it was distracting to keep flicking view from subtitles-stage. But after a while, even that I became used to. Both me and my husband loved it👍

I did not realise it was all in Spanish with English subtitles to read which took away from the enjoyment of the show. However, it did bring, I guess, a flavour of Cuba to London and that was nice. The singers had wonderful voices. The dancing was at a good level and the story set in pre and during Revolution was excellent. I would recommend seeing it if you understand Spanish.

Congratulations to this largely Cuban cast for a fantastic performance full of colour, dance, rhythm and energy. As Carmen, the glamorous Luna Manzanares Nardo is the star of the show. She has great looks and a great voice. But right there beside her is the famous Albita Rodriguez who plays La Senora, an enigmatic seer, narrator and the soul of 1950s Cuba. How she can sing!

I'm not an opera expert but I love Carmen in all formats. This production was fantastic. Change of period, move from Seville to Cuba and matador became boxer. Music less formal and very melodious. The four main characters were excellent; they really made you believe in the plot and the vocals were superb. Great mix of lively Latin and sweet song. Sets were great and choreography held attention. Whole cast contributed to a great night's entertainment. Auditorium very hot - but then we are experiencing exceptional temperatures, but would advise taking hand fans and water!

A very enjoyable performance with dynamism, fun and sadness plus excellent performances. I loved the adaptation from Bizet’s opera and from the musical “Carmen Jones” and very much enjoyed the strong Cuban vibe. So worth seeing.

Brilliant. I've seen three versions of carmen now, the original in French at the Royal Opera House, a revival of Carmen Jones and this one. Carmen La Cubana is by far the best. Great songs brilliantly sung, wonderful staging and quite superb dancing.

Although we enjoyed the dancing and singing there was still a lot of dialogue which could have been left out and would not have detracted from the script. Would recommend but not the best alas

I loved Carmen la Cubana. It entertained from beginning to end with it’s eclectic mix of Classical and Latin American music. The cast gave a high energy performance with fantastic singing, dancing and acting. I loved the chemistry between the two lovers and the band were brilliant too. All in all a great evening.
