Getting Around in Amsterdam

Public Transport

  • Amsterdam’s main public transport system is operated by GVB (http://en.gvb.nl/)
  • It is made up of 4 metro lines, 15 tram lines, 43 bus routes and 10 ferry connections
  • Single and multi-day tickets are available at GVB Service Points throughout the city and via vending machines inside metro stations.
  • You can also purchase a rechargeable public transport chip card (OV-chipkaart) at GVB service desks and vending machines, or online at https://www.ov-chipkaart.nl

Bike

  • One of the fastest and most economical ways to get around Amsterdam is by bike!
  • There are nearly 400km of bicycle paths throughout the city, which lead to most of its famous attractions
  • Popular rental organisations in the city include MacBike, Star Bike and Yellow Bike.

Car

  • Parking: Parking in Amsterdam city centre is limited and can be expensive. Parking meters do not accept cash, and payments can only be made using a major (international) credit card or a Dutch bank card.
  • Park + Ride: If you are renting a car in Amsterdam, the cheapest way to access the city centre is by using a Park + Ride car park. These are located on the outskirts of the city, with parking from as little as €1 per 24 hours!
