Rosmersholm
Rosmersholm
Ian Rickson (The Birthday Party, Jerusalem) directs Tom Burke (TV’s Strike), Hayley Atwell (Agent Carter) and Giles Terera (Hamilton) in the West End premiere of Duncan Macmillan‘s (184, People, Places and Things) startling new adaptation of Henrik Ibsen’s gripping and piercingly relevant work of personal and political passion.
An election looming. A country on the brink. A rabid press baying for blood. At the centre of the storm is Rosmersholm, the grand house of an influential dynasty. This is where the future will be decided by John Rosmer – a man torn between the idealised hope of the future and the ghosts of his past.
‘Ibsen’s masterpiece’ (Michael Billington, 2008) is a twisting thriller and stars three electrifying actors in the leading roles. Tom Burke (Strike, The Musketeers) is the soulful Rosmer haunted by history and tradition. Hayley Atwell (Howards End, Captain America) is Rebecca West, one of Ibsen’s greatest heroines. Enigmatic and unpredictable, free-spirited Rebecca brings the winds of change to Rosmersholm with the force of a hurricane. Giles Terera (Hamilton, West End) is Andreas Kroll, a powerful moral voice, who struggles to reconcile his friendship to Rosmer amidst the changing political tides.

A brilliant take on Ibsen's work. The set, lighting and costumes were amazing. The scene at the end - powerful.

In all honesty, despite the amazing cast and the fact that I love Ibsen, I found this piece very difficult to connect with. It looked stunning and I was really looking forward to it. I confess I left in the interval. The actors were a touch quiet, and they seemed to speak in profile most of the time. I longed to see their faces. Also they had a tendency to upstage themselves, so I felt again excluded from what was going on. I know other many people have raved about this production, but I felt let down.

This was the first time I have seen Rosmersholm. I love how Ibsens dialogue always seems so relevant to current events. This production was excellent the staging and acting were really impressive. Time passed so quickly. As already stated I had never seen this play before and knew very little about it so the ending was surprising and I have to say rather a let down. In fact it was ridiculous and this is the reason for the 4star rating

What a superb production of Rosmersholm is this current one. I am very fond of Ibsen but it's the first time I have seen this one. The set was great and the principal actors were outstanding, particularly Hayley Atwell.

Thought I'd seen all Ibsens but not this one! Usual themes, women's emancipation, unjust society & suicide. Brilliantly portrayed by all the cast, lots of little humorous moments to relieve the ultimate tragedy. Beautiful set. A perfect theatrical experience.

A gripping and brilliantly acted adaptation with plenty of references which are as fresh now as when the play was written

We thoroughly enjoyed Rosmersholm - themes relevant to today and brilliantly acted with a real twist at the end - left the theatre with lots to think and talk about. Brilliant!

Excellent play, gripping from the outset, multidimensional and way ahead of it's time. Ibsen's voice shines through and every nuance is adeptly accentuated by actors that embrace and cross the divide between the past and the present. Brilliantly done!

Very good, especially second half, well played by all characters, the ending would be difficult to act but could have been more dramatic.

I thought Hayley Atwell as Rebecca West and Tom Burke as the Pastor were not convincing in the main parts. The actor playing Crkull was excellent as were some of the other actors in minor roles. A shame as the impact of the drama was lost.

I thought this was an amazing production, which did a great job of bringing Ibsen's work up to date for a modern audience. The staging and performances were wonderful, and if at times it felt as though the script was working a little too hard to be relevant, this is a very minor criticism!

As with all the great writers, Ibsen's work strikes a chord with modern day audiences. A rarely performed play, the direction and actors were all superb, but the star is definitely Ibsen. Well done, as well, to the translator. A very enjoyable experience.

Thought the Play was excellent and right length. Very well cast and excellent acting, palpable chemistry between the two main characters. Thought the Set good, just a shame we couldn't see the Candelabras (slightly restricted View). I guessed the end but the final effects were still very effective ! All round good evening.

The lead actors were brilliant but there are a number of supporting actors without speaking parts who generated such intense atmosphere everyone was fantastic at this disturbing brilliant piece of human challenge.

The adaptation of Rosmersholm was very pertinent to today with its political ideas of both right and left as portrayed by Kroll and Mortensgaard. Tom Burke and Haley Atwell’s portrayal of their characters was both brilliant and powerful.

There was so much to love about tgis show; Hayley Attwell and Tom Burke are stellar, all the support cast (including servant super-numeries, who acted their socks off with no words at all) were excellent, the set is beautiful, the lighting is lovely. Just that Ibsen bloke, really. No wonder this isn't produced often, because it's very silly. And I enjoyed 'Emperor and Galilean' so I'm predisposed to like Henrik's work. That said, I'm pleased to have had the chance to see the play, and the acting and production values are extremely impressive.

thank you for upstaging our seats, the view was splendid and all 3 of us enjoyed the play tremendously, a skilfully crafted version of the Ibsen play, relevant at this time in Brexit history Thanks again Gertrud R.

This was a difficult play for a modern audience, but a fluent adaptation and outstanding performances all round made it entirely accessible. The various balances in theme and characterisation were beautifully handled within a sensitively lit and evocative set. My one criticism is that, seated on the right hand edge of the stalls, the entire stage left side of the set was invisible. Given that the windows, which we could not see, looked out onto the bridge and offered the final defining exit of Rosmer and Rebecca, this was unfortunate and could have been easily avoided.

Brilliant acting in main roles, especially Rebecca and Kroll. I found Tom Burke as Romsers less compelling. It's a strange, complex and interesting play, relevant to issues of media involvement in current political and interplay between personal and political. The ending is not entirely convincing although it is very imaginatively created on stage.

A good play albeit a bit slow at times . A dramatic ending though a fuller explanation in the narrative about the motivation for that course of action, might have made the ending less abrupt.
