Welcome to Studio Portmanteau! We are happily based out of a bright, cheerful studio space housed in a historic building in downtown Grants Pass, Oregon. Each product sold in the shop is a one-of-a-kind creation designed and made by our team in the Pacific Northwest. Most of our items are hand-pressed with metal dies on one of four vintage foil stampers that are the mainstay of our studio. We combine seven years of foil stamping expertise with strong design insight to bring you high quality orders that fit your needs. With our craft, we aim to create heirloom goods that can serve as keepsakes for years to come. When you purchase one of our goods, you are acquiring a carefully crafted, bespoke item that was created with love and care by the Studio Portmanteau team. Every material we emboss on is carefully sourced from vendors we trust to be durable, high quality, and eco-friendly, be it paper, leather, wood, or linen. Our custom text items are stamped on a vintage foil press, one at a time, through a careful process of arranging individual metal letters by hand in a typeholder, and centering and adjusting the type and the item back and forth to perfect each print before completing a set. Prepping for each individual message ordered in this vintage, nostalgic, and slightly amazing method is time consuming, but the end result is rewarding — a keepsake good crafted to last for life. So where did the shop name come from? A portmanteau is an old French word for a box or suitcase that opens into two equal parts (much like our matchboxes). The shop logo is derived from an imagined antique lock on an old leather suitcase, something like one would carry on a long train journey. And just how do you pronounce portmanteau? It rhymes with studio (port-man-toe). :)
