Commonly spelled Fez, this city was Morocco’s capital during Middle Ages. The city was originally composed of two separate settlements located along the banks of the Jawhar River. Madinat Fas was founded in 789 by Idris I, while Al-'Aliya was founded by his son Idris II. Both towns grew autonomously until the Almoravids unified them in 1070 under the name ‘Fas’. The city is still considered a beacon of the Islamic civilisation, due to its ancient ‘madrasas’ Islamic colleges.
The Old Town or ‘medina’ has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, representing one of the best preserved historic centres in the world. The famous ‘riads’ or small traditional hotels are located in the medina, which is also called Fes Al-Bali.
The city can be reached through Fès Saïss Airport, or from the airports in Casablanca and Rabat via railway or bus connection. Whether you’re looking for a luxury hotel in Fez New Town or a historic ‘riad’ in the medina, don’t miss Booking.com’s wide offering!
just dont. Morocco has a lot more good cities to spent time.
just dont. Morocco has a lot more good cities to spent time. If you really want to see then 1 day would be plenty but for me even this duration might be too long. In this city you always need to be on your toes or else you are an easy target for people who wants to just squeze money out of you

The Medina and its surrounds are very charming to look at from a rooftop, however to be quite honest, spending time walking endlessly in the narrow and enclosed space felt quite oppressive. We weren’t interested in buying anything and it was a bit of an assault to see the endless offerings of basically the same things. The merchants looked resigned to their fate and the energy of the place just didn’t feel great. Kind of depressing.

Fez is a beautifull city with a gorgeous old medina.
Fez is a beautifull city with a gorgeous old medina. We didn't use a guide but google maps and it worked just fine for the main roads. But if you stay near the old medina and need to go somewhere via the narrow alleyways you can get lost easily! It's a maze where everything looks the same.
The people are mostly friendly but they will try their best to get you in their shop or restaurant which can be frustrating. But just say no respectfully and most of the time they will leave you alone.
Don't listen to people who are saying things are closed, like the doors of the medina or places during prayer time. Its not true and they only do say that to get you to another place.
After all its a beautifull place, but with sometimes frustrating locals, but they just want to make money and I understand that.

I would not recommend this city.
I would not recommend this city.
I liked the place where I stayed - the host was very nice.
But the city itself is cahotic and overwelming… a lot of harassement, a lot of con people trying to get money from you, lots of drug dealers in the street pretending to be your friend just to force you to buy from them, you cant look around to the shops because someone always wants to force you to buy something. I am an extrovert and this city was too much for me. I think I never got so scammed so fast and so aware of it all my life.
It smells miserable and it is very dirty - I don’t you are ready for the smell of the tanneries…
Almost no music anywhere, mostly just praying on megafones 5x a day.
We did manage to find some truly kind people, but the rate of those vs. the ones who just wanted money from us/to sell their services, was too much! Be sure you book a place with a nice host to help you navigate throught these situations and emotions…

Fes is an incredible city.
Fes is an incredible city. So much history and such friendly people. The sellers in the medina were keen to sell us anything and everything but weren't very pushy and took a polite "non merci" for an answer.
Lots of lovely cafes and restaurants. We liked Cinema cafe, Clock cafe and the Ruined garden restaurant. Cafe Nos Nos served really good coffee. Great temperature for January. Not too hot for walking about but warm enough to sit outside and eat.
Amazing history too, The world's oldest university and library are in the medina.
We did several day trips to Meknes, Volubilis and Chefchaouen.
A trip to the American Fondouk was interesting to see the work of the charity with local working equines.
Lots of walking but also easy to take a petit taxi when tired.
Our Riad was just amazing and we will be back as soon as we can.

It's easy to get around Fès, but I would recommend taking a walking tour when first arriving to get your bearings. You can book free walking tours with Guru Walks. My architectural and historical tour was fantastic. Fès is also a great location for taking day tours out of the city such as the day tour I took to Moulay Idriss, Volubilis Roman ruins and Meknes, a former royal capital city of Morocco. Both were fabulous tours and you meet others if you are travelling alone.
Spectacular would not be a strong enough word to describe this property and the experience in Fes, Morocco. The management and staff were fantastic. They made sure we had everything we needed to make our stay comfortable and rewarding. The dinners at the Riad were fantastic as well.
They arranged a private tour of the Medina for us with an excellent guide, Abdul. If you plan on going to Fes, this is an ideal property in a great location and you should definitely ask for Abdul as a guide. It was a great experience!
Riad Fes Aicha is the best place to stay.
It is very close to the entrance of the Medina (the most interesting attraction of Fez).
The host Omar is very kind, helpful and very nice.
The breakfast is very good, plentiful, full of fresh and homemade food. Moreover, on the morning of our departure, the flight was at 6 a.m. and Omar prepared a take-away breakfast for us (even if it wasn’t the breakfast hours).
The room was comfortable.
Omar gave us numerous recommendations.
We highly recommend this hotel.
Riad Idrissy was my most favourite Riad in my entire trip travelling around Morocco. The Riad is absolutely beautiful. It is beautifully maintained and in a great part of the medina. The staff were wonderful and friendly and made our stay even better. The food at the restaurant was amazing and the cooks were lovely. I would highly recommend this riad and will stay here for a much longer time if I visit Fes again. I absolutely loved the place, and it made our stay in Fes memorable.
Our stay in Dar Borj was great! The hotel is very close to the Blue Gate. Considering how easy to get lost in the medina of Fez, the location was perfect! Especially if you come by car, there is a very close parking place. The room was in a very good condition. The breakfast was great! But besides all of these, Othmane was the best host ever! He was very welcoming and he helped us with whatever we needed during our stay. He definitely made our stay different! Strongly recommended!
We had a wonderful stay here. The riad is beautiful, in a calm street right next to the road, so it is quiet but easily accessible by taxi and a short walking distance from all the attractions in the medina. The breakfast was very good. Mohsim was the perfect host. He made us feel very welcome and helped us with everything we needed. The tours he arranged for us were great and the mint tea he served us was the best we had during our stay in Morocco.
Dar Seffarine was an incredible place to stay in Fes. The house itself is a work of art and our room was delightfully cool and comfortable in the heat. The rooftop also offered great views of the medina and was a quiet place to take in the city. The food was fantastic; the breakfast was deliciously filling and the dinners were some of the best we had across Morocco. We absolutely recommend staying here if in Fes!
Riad Fes Iline is very well located close to the Fes Medina. Also the breakfast is more than adequate and they can offer a good and competitively priced dinner plus wine and beer if desired. Transfers to and from the hotel are great and they can also arrange local tours if required. Staff are attentive and willing to provide whatever we needed. The rooms are clean and comfortable.
The hotel manager Mr. Reibal is a true professional who loves his job. All his work is focused on the satisfaction of his guests. Riyadh is in a very convenient location. Just outside and near the Medina. No need to look for a hotel in narrow streets. The staff is very attentive. Together with Mr. Reibal they are very attentive to help with everything.
The place’s vibe is absolutely amazing, full of young and enthusiastic staff and guests. It’s handy location inside the medina and its fabulous decos give people more reasons to considering visiting here again. Of course, the hotel staff gave a lot of advice on our travel in Fes, which is really helpful in this maze-like place.
Its a unique little boutique-style hotel near the city of Fes. Accessible and walking distance to the Medina and shops. Friendly owners (Salah & Nour) and staffs. Great hospitality. Nour even arranged some tours with us so we won’t get lost in the Medina. They also packed us breakfast as we were rushing for the morning train.
The Riad was absolutely amazing!! It was the most beautiful property during our whole stay in Morocco, the internal architecture was stunning, it was super clean and the staff was very friendly. The breakfast had a wide range of options. Last but not least, the terrace was also charming with a nice Fes medina view.
The hotel location was great
- 10 mins away by taxi to Mediná
- sourrounded by great bars, cafés, restaurants and a big shopping center
Very comfy hotel room... very clean... perfect to recover from the day activity.
Breakfast with a lot of food variations
Pool to cool down from the outside heat
Very attractively decorated lobby and dining area. Also a beautiful roof terrace and excellent breakfast, wherever you want to sit. Quiet location in the busy city center of Fes. The friendly manager Karim and his staff were very helpful. Best hotel this first week of our Morocco trip!
A beautiful riad right inside the medina with comfortable air-conditioned rooms with authentic Moroccan furnishings. It's quiet, the staff are very helpful and obliging, and the food is superb - the best I ate in Morocco. I will definitely stay there again on any future visit to Fes.
The location is ideal to discover the Fes Medina. The hotel is an old house which was well restored to reflect the ancient style. All the staff were very helpful. Ideal for someone who loves to travel back into the past to get a feel for how people lived hundreds of years ago.
I loved the room and Hotel itself. The rooms were so spectacular! This is the PERFECT location to explore and get to know Fes. Everything you need in walking distance. Very affordable compared to other cities in Morocco. The staff is very willing to help your every need.
The hotel is amazing, very well located in the middle of the Medina.
Super super clean and comfortable.
The people working at the hotel were very nice, friendly and they make you feel at home.
For sure if I have the chance to visit Fes again I will stay in the same hotel.
Great Dar (traditional Hotel), quiet with just 2 minutes walk from the Old Fés Medina. Service was impeccable. Special shout out for Karim and his brother for their kind help and exchanges! If I go back to Fez, I will see I out Dar Victoria.
I like this place! Good location in the centre of Fes-Albali, near old medina. Manager is very nice, he does meeting, helps and speak very well. Really a good manager! In Morocco people very kind🔥 beautiful
Such a lovely place… The team do their best to make your stay comfortable. Soufiane at the lodge who’ll also be a professional tour guide works so hard and can answer all your queries about Morocco.
