Wonderful.
I bought this book after having read the excellent "The Dry" by Jane Harper and couldn't recommend it or indeed this one more highly.
The story is intriguing, well-written, and expansive. The characters seem entirely three-dimensional and are well presented. The narration is top-notch. A truly flawless rendition. All credit to Stephen Shanahan for bringing this book to life.
It's a slow burn to be sure, but my experience is best summarised by the fact that I completed it in two marathon sessions and couldn't believe five hours had passed by the time I drew to a close. It's a book that makes you forget you're even listening to it and draws you into the story masterfully.
The Outback never feels as tense and mysterious as it does in a Jane Harper novel, to be sure.

Another winner from Jane Harper!
Jane Harper's latest story is compelling and beautifully narrated. She understands the brutal harshness of the land in the outback, and her narrative let's us understand it too. The story kept me hooked, I would have listened to it all in one sitting if I could. She is excellent at developing her characters and I really felt that I knew them. The gradual revelations as the story progresses are well done. Hoping for another book soon!

A deep slow burner
I loved Stephen's voice and reading. I have lived in Oz, in Adelaide, a very different experience from living in the Outback. We travelled widely in Oz and stayed in small towns and saw the vastness of the desert. So always aware of life in small town outback and desert Oz. I feel Jane captures those aspects beautifully. The family behaviours and experiences she describes are true to any place and part of life but the setting gave them deeper and more intense feelings.
I have heard The Dry and Forces of Nature and so appreciated the references to the characters and stories in The Dry.
I look forward to Jane's next book - no pressure then!!

Excellent! Her best yet & great narrator
I really loved The Dry, and like Force of Nature but I love The Lost Man! And the narrator is amazing - normally quite pronounced accents get tiresome quickly, but this Australian accent was just perfect the whole way through (though his attempts at British English were extremely funny!)

Plot
At the start of the story the narrator had lots of description about the Australian outback,initially I thought this was going to be boring and I wanted to get to the plot but as the story unfolded the descriptive became part of the plot and was part of the story. Really enjoyable and very well thought out story

Slow burner building to shocking family secrets
It took me a while to get into it, and at first I couldn't figure out what it was about, but go with it and you're taken into a world we don't really know exists. And the climax creeps up on you

Strongly recommended
A gripping, unfolding story . The location is set so well I could visualise the outback and the characters fleshed out so that I could understand their struggles . Slowly the truth is revealed but still the ending took me quite by surprise
