Our story begins back in 2007, when I decided to volunteer for a feline only, no kill, animal shelter. Volunteering for the animal shelter quickly lead to my fostering a feral little kitten named Moki. Within weeks of taking Moki in as a foster kitten, Moki grew extremely ill. The shelter being the small shelter that it was, lacked the funds needed to treat Moki's illness so I decided to adopt Moki. Little did I know at that time, but the decision to adopt Moki would have a profound impact on my life.
Moki would go on to survive the virus which made him ill, but the virus left him with a severe neurological disorder. In an attempt to figure out what caused Moki's illness numerous medical tests were preformed. These medical tests grew increasing expensive as more and more specialists tried to assess what was wrong with Moki. In my own attempt to find answers I reached out to animal lovers on the internet.
As I shared Moki's story, support for Moki grew. People from all around the world stepped up to help cover Moki's medical expenses, which at that point in time included an MRI and CSF Tap. Ultimately, despite Moki going through some of the most advanced medical testing available, Moki's medical condition baffled the veterinarians who were treating him. Since nothing more could be done to address the cause of Moki's illness, a veterinary neurologist at UC Davis recommended that I focus my attention on the physical aspects of Moki's disease. The veterinary neurologist went on to suggested that Moki be started on a round of small animal physical rehabilitation.
Supporters of Moki once again stepped up to the plate to help raise money for Moki's physical rehabilitation. Artists, craftsmen, and authors donated their work to be auctioned off to help raise funds for Moki. Those who couldn't create, donated money, other items, or helped by spreading the word about Moki.
The first small animal physical rehabilitation center which treated Moki eventually went out of business, leaving me to seek out another treatment center. Eventually I ended up going with a small animal physical rehabilitation center known as Scout's House. At that time, Scout's House had a small fund which helped to finance the physical rehabilitation of animals in need who otherwise couldn't afford it. This fund eventually lead to the creation of a non-profit known as Scout's Fund.
As I got to know the people at Scout's House better, I developed a relationship with them. When Scout's Fund was created I was therefore asked to be their Director of Social Media. At the same time all of this was going on Scout's House recommended that Moki add veterinary acupuncture to his medical treatments.
When Moki began veterinary acupuncture treatments I began to create some products to sell, such as calendars, to help cover his acupuncture costs. This was in addition to items which were still being donated by his supporters.
Soon Moki's story caught the attention of Animal Planet's "Must Love Cats," who reached out to me and asked if they could feature Moki's story on their show. Moki's story was featured on Season 2 of "Must Love Cats," back in 2012.
In 2015, I opened up this Etsy store and began to create products to sell in order to continuing helping Moki and other animals in need. Opening up my own Etsy store, allowed me to share two of my passions with the world, that of creating, and that of helping animals.
