The Just Like Papa Briefcase was originally released through Sewing with Boys.

My three-yer-old is obsessed with his grandpa’s briefcase. I wanted to come up with something that he would love and that would keep him out of Papa’s stuff!

The briefcase has pockets galore – book pocket, crayon or pencil pocket, and a zippered pocket with a vinyl see-through window. The book pocket fits a drawing pad, slim books, and most tablets. They are all completely customizable and interchangeable. My testers had so much fun playing around with them! Several added even more pockets to the outside and they turned it into everything from a medical bag to a needlework bag for herself (I’ve already stolen that idea!).

The briefcase is closed with two zippers (I promise they’re not that scary!) which go around three sides, and slightly onto the bottom – this means it opens completely flat. It also means it’s perfect for waiting rooms, church, in the car, wherever, really! Being able to flip it closed and zip it up means you don’t have to worry about leaving a trail of your kids’ things behind you.

The exterior is a great place to embroider a name for personalization. It would make a great gift for birthdays, Christmas, or a special occasion.

Finished measurements: 12” wide, 9.5” high, 2” deep. The pattern includes a cutting chart as well as full-sized pattern pieces and is fully and clearly illustrated. See the final picture of this listing for the fabric and notion requirements.

Super helpful with my few questions, detailed pattern that was very easy to follow. turned out fantastic and the few changes I'll make next time have to do with changes I made to the pattern such as rib knit on the bottom and not with the original. I'm very happy with it and would absolutely buy again.

I have been sewing for about a decade, but I am always learning new things. The one part I was impressed by in the instructions was the way the zipper and zipper flap were done. I really had to trust the instructions even though you can’t really see what you’re doing and that part turned out great! There were other parts that I found just totally confusing. I never figured out the facings for the mandarin collar and zipper. I tried to pin it as described and my brain just couldn’t figure it out! Not my first facings rodeo, but still! I just fiddled with it and did it the way that made the most sense for the place I was at. Made it work! I’m not thrilled with the fit, but that’s half on me. Did I muslin? No. Did the squirmy kid let me get good measurements? No. The low waist bugs him most and I would adjust up if I do it again.
